Elephants belong to the order Proboscidea and they are the largest land mammal living on the planet. There are three species of elephant: the African bush elephants, the African forest elephants and the Asian elephants. The African male elephant can reach 13.12ft (4m) of height and a weight of 7 tons. It has stocky pillar-like legs, a compact body and a convex curvature of the backbone, large ears and a big head with a long mobile trunk. They live in savannas and grasslands. The African forest elephants live secluded in the forest and they can live up to 60 years growing throughout their life. They live in family groups that are headed by an experienced female and some other females of different ages and their offspring.
Elephants in Mythology: In the Stone Age, humans had a close relationship with the ancestors of the elephants, the mammoths. They hunted them and there are many representations in cave paintings. In the 3,000 BC, the elephants were extinct in Egypt. In Asia, the elephants perform tasks such a moving heavy loads. They were considered great instruments of war, as in the Battle of Gaugamela, where Alexander the Great of Macedon fought against the Greeks. And also Hannibal (218 BC.) took elephants across the Alps to fight against the Roman Empire.
The elephant is considered wise, strong and immaculate but also very spiteful. Many African states have the elephant as their heraldic animal. The highest order of Denmark is called the Order of the Elephant. The Hindu God Ganesh is represented with a head of an elephant and it represents wisdom and welfare as it is considered as an assistant during bad times. In Buddhism, it is said that a white elephant appeared before Buddha's mother before he was born. In China, the elephants are a symbol of male power. Sadly, in the traditional Chinese medicine the ivory is used as a supposed male strengthener. In Christianity and Judaism, the elephant represents the "sexual carnal energy".
The elephant in the interpretation of dreams: if this animal appears in our dreams, it is related to wisdom and memory. It can also refer to the interior perseverance and our sensibility towards the other people.
