Giraffe

The giraffe is the largest mammal of Africa. It belongs to the even-toed ungulates. Male giraffes measure a total of 19.68ft (6m) from the ground to their horns: 11.48ft (3.5m) at the shoulders with a long neck of 8.20ft (2.5 m). Males weigh up to 1.9 tons. Giraffes have long sturdy legs and its long neck results from a disproportionate lengthening of the cervical vertebrae, not from the addition of more vertebrae as the giraffe has 7 cervical vertebrae, just like all other mammals.

Giraffe in Mythology: The giraffes play an important role in the mythology of the African tribes since the people there are highly impressed by its majestic beauty and its size. Nowadays, giraffe skin is still important for many people. In ancient times, giraffes lived in North Africa. There are numerous images where they can be seen. The representation of the Egyptian God Seth could also have its origin in a giraffe. However, these animals were already exterminated by the inhabitants of that region by that time therefore; giraffes were mainly unknown to the European people. The giraffe brought from Alexandria by Julius Caesar in 46 BC was the first to be seen in Europe. An extraordinary creature, it appeared to the Romans to be part camel and part leopard. So, it was named after both: camelopardalis, the latin name of the giraffe. The Arabs called it zarafa, meaning "the loving". In 1690, the Dutch astronomer Hevelius named a constellation "Giraffe", since it has a similar shape.

The giraffe in the interpretation of dreams: it represents the ability to have a global view and to own a timid grace.
