Hummingbirds are birds that belong to the neognaths. They can be found in North and South America and are the smallest bird among birds. Some specimens measure only 1,96in (5cm), and others measure up to 9in (23cm). They weigh between 0,07oz (2g) and 0,52oz (15g) and the length of their beaks varies according to the species and their long tongue is a distinctive feature. Their tongues have grooves on the sides that collect nectar. When the bill constricts, the hummingbird can swallow the nectar from flowers and feeders.
Most hummingbirds have a flashy and shiny metallic green plumage. They fly with frequencies of flapping of up to 40 to 50 movements per second. That is amazing, isn´t it? It can rotate its wings in a circle, allowing it to fly both forwards and backwards; fly up or down, move sideways, or hover in one spot. They are acrobats in the air. They have a high-energy requirement which they cover with the very energetic nectar from the flowers. Occasionally, they also capture small insects to get some protein. In order to obtain the favor of females, males perform a dance that resembles a waltz. After mating, females build a tiny nest where they lay two eggs, which will be incubated for a period of time of 14 to 19 days. The baby hummingbirds are fed daily and during three to four weeks up to 140 (!) times a day.
