The Lamas come from the Andean Highlands of South America and belong to the camelid. They have been bred by man for 4,000 - 5,000 years. The height of a full-grown Lama is 1.2 to 2.2 m (3 to 7.0 ft) and can weigh between 121 to 330lb (55 to 150 kg). Their ears are approximately half of the length of the head, can be positioned from erect to rotated backward 90+ degrees. Lamas live in herds and are very social animals, however, they sometimes spit. It is two-toed with a broad leathery pad on the bottom and curved nails in front and it has long slender legs. The tail is very hairy at the top. Its hair is composed of short, fine wool and longer hair. The guanaco is the only wild species alive while llamas and alpacas are domesticated. Lamas are appreciated for their meat, milk, wool and as beasts of burden.
Lamas in Mythology: Lamas are considered sacred animals for the native of the Andes in South America and they are still vital to the survival of such people in the little fertile highlands. They play an important role in their mythology and rituals. The Quechua people called them "our brothers who do not speak". Bezoar balls were made with their hair and were highly valued as a means of healing.
Lamas in the interpretation of dreams: this animal that spits is a symbolic figure of unpredictability and uncontrolled behavior.
