The tarantulas are giants in the spiders' world. Its body is about 4.72in (12cm) and can achieve a leg span of up to 11in (28cm). Both body and legs are covered with hard hair. There are 850 species around the world. Most of them live in the tropics and subtropics, on trees or on holes made on the ground (see also Spider Essence). They usually eat anything that they can hunt, that is, large insects, including locusts, scorpions and cockroaches; sometimes small snakes, lizards, frogs, young or sick birds.
Tarantulas in Mythology: Arachne (spider in Greek) competed with Athens to see who could weave the most beautiful carpet. She did some drawings inspired in her amorous adventures with the gods and that enraged Athens in such a way that she destroyed the carpet. Arachne hanged herself and Athens turned her into a spider and the rope in a spider's web. For many indigenous cultures, spiders are a symbol of creativity due to their ability to produce yarns and weave them into a fabric. The spider, as weaver of the worlds, appears in many indigenous myths. For example, the female spider Kokyangwuti who created the world and wrapped it with a white capping is the creative wisdom. In Indian mythology, the spider's web is a symbol of the cosmic order. From some Native American people, we know the "dreamcatcher" which "catches" the bad dreams so that the sleeping people only have good dreams.
