(Nymphalis urticae)
With more than 165,000 species belonging to 127 families, butterflies are one of the most varied insects around the world. The body and wings are covered by tiny scales in the form of American shingle. They have a proboscis used to suck up nectar from flowers. Diurnal butterflies are colorful and fly only in good weather. During their mating dance, their striking colors as well as the odorous substances secreted, the pheromones play an important role. Worm-like larvae called caterpillars emerge from the eggs. The caterpillars eat and grow fast, and eventually they stop feeding and transform into a pupa, a resting stage in which they cannot move or feed. There, they experience a general metamorphosis and mutate to a gorgeous fully developed flying insect that comes out of the pupa. They have a slender body of delicate members, long antennae, compound lateral eyes, six legs and four large wings.
Many native species of Europe are dangerously threatened. This is mainly due to the loss of their habitat and of the plants on which they feed and to the excessive use of insecticides. You can reduce this trend, planting specific plants for butterflies in your garden or balcony. Talk to the people in your nursery or get informed on the internet.
Butterfly in Mythology: Greek and Roman mythology consider butterflies as a symbol of reincarnation and immortality. The Greek word for butterfly means, in its translation, "psyche". The nymph of the psyche is also often represented with butterfly wings. For Christianity, it is a symbol of resurrection. It starts as a caterpillar, crawling on the floor; it then turns into a motionless pupa which then develops as a wonderful butterfly which flies towards the sky. In China, it is a symbol of immortality, in Japan; a white butterfly embodies the soul of the deceased. For some indigenous people, it symbolizes a healer that draws the rainbow in the air. In many languages, it recreates a flying insect through the name it is given: in Italian "frafall", in French "papillon", in Portuguese "borboleta", in Indonesian "Kupukupu", etc.
