The world's glaciers store up to 70% of the world's fresh water and are the largest water reservoirs on earth after the oceans. In the stratifications of the glaciers, the climate development over thousands of years can be scientifically tracked by drilling. The Aletsch Glacier is one of the valley glaciers. With a length of 22.7 kilometers and an area of 81.7 km², it is the largest glacier in the Alps.
